Sports Massage Therapy

Sports Massage is a type of massage designed for highly active people who engage in athletics. Engaging in sports is harsh on the body and can often lead to injuries in both the short and long term. Sports Massage enhances performance and prolongs a sports career by helping to prevent injury, reduce pains and swelling in the body, relax the mind, increase flexibility, and dramatically improve recovery rates. Sports Massage is also highly effective in aiding the rapid recovery of an athlete from an injury by encouraging greater kinesthetic awareness and in turn promoting the body's natural immune function.

There are numerous benefits to a comprehensive Sports Massage program:

  • Improvement of circulation

  • Reduces muscle tension

  • Reduces swelling

  • Aids in lymphatic drainage

  • Decreases muscle fatigue

  • Aids in preventing muscular spasm

  • Accelerates recovery from training and competition

  • Increases flexibility and range of motion

  • Aids in the healing of acute injuries so that they do not become a source of repetitive aggravation

  • Breaks down scar tissue and adhesions which lead to improper muscular function

  • And much more…

How are Sports Massage treatments different from a basic massage Treatment? While each system uses a hands-on approach to soft tissue manipulation, Sports Massages are extremely specific. Like massage therapy, Sports Massage address the muscle bellies, but they also go to work with the entire length of the muscle from origin to insertion. Instead of a general approach, Sports Massage identifies postural and biomechanical distortions that are involved with pain patterns. These systems also go on to strategically manipulate specific soft tissue components to facilitate structural change and balance.

Sports massage has become an integral part of the new athletic regimen from sports medicine clinics, to college training rooms, to professional locker rooms to Olympic training. Growing number of trainers believe that massage can provide an extra edge to the athletes who participate in high performance sports.
